PONY Baseball Age changes
Note:
We're actively trying to figure out what to do about a little glitch that has come to our attention regarding
players born between May 1 and August 31
...for details, please read on.
About 5 years ago, PONY National changed the age cutoffs for all divisions, which wreaked all kinds of havoc on our league. This year, they changed it back!
The new (old) age cutoff is back to April 30. So, if your player was born between May 1 and August 31, then they're affected by the rule change.
1. ALL DIVISIONS: If your player's birthday falls between May 1 and August 31, and they have already played 2 years in their assigned division, then they are encouraged to play up into the next division. Option 2 would be to play a third year in the lower division (recommended for newer players needing additional skills development).
2. SHETLAND: If your player's birthday falls in that range, and they have only played one year but they're
really
ready to play up, then you may enroll them in PINTO.
3. IN GENERAL, if your player has only played one year in their division AND they are affected by the age change, ECYB's recommendation is to keep them in their new official division (i.e. play a second year in the same division as last year).
Example 1: My kid has a July birthday, and has played 2 years in each division all the way through Mustang. We feel he's ready for Bronco, and most of his former teammates will be there, so we plan to enroll him in Bronco.
Example 2: My neighbor's kid has an August birthday, and was the youngest player on her Pinto team last year. They feel she could use some more time at the same level, so they're going to enroll her in Pinto again, per her official Pony age.
I hope this sheds some light on the situation, and makes for a smooth registration process. During registration, should any issues come up, please don't hesitate to contact our ECBY Registrar, Ellie Blue, at
[email protected]
.
Thanks for reading, and we look forward to welcoming all the kids back out on the field soon!
Best,
Your ECYB Board
